Montville

Montville is a township located in the northeastern region of Morris County, New Jersey. The town was ranked 13th in Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" issue in 2013 and 17th in 2011. It shares its western border with Boonton Township and Lake Hiawatha. The communities that make up the 12,236.8-acre township include the following:

History

The Dutch were the first European settlers to come to the area. They referred to it as Uyle-Kill, translating to Owl-Kill. The first roads were formed in 1740. Route 202 was used for travel to the gristmill, tanneries, and sawmill. In 1756, the Dutch Reformed Church was established in Old Boonton. It was later moved to Montville in the early 1800s. 

The area was used as a military route that took General George Washington's troops from Morristown to the Hudson River in the American Revolutionary War. Washington was known to stay in Towaco during 1780. Under General Rochambeau, the French troops passed through, heading toward victory in Yorktown, Virginia. The group consisted of the following:

  • 5,000 soldiers
  • 2,000 horses
  • 500 oxen
  • approximately 900 cattle
  • artillery
  • boats 
  • followers

The township was named after Mandeville Inn, which was formed in 1770 and stood until 2006. In 1828 construction on the Morris Canal was completed bringing both commercial and residential development. The area was officially incorporated as a township in 1867, taking land from Pequannock Township. 

In 1867, the first school was built on Taylortown Road. It became the town hall until it was converted to the first post office in 1939. The building reopened in 1963 as the Montville Township Museum. The museum offers it's guest a look into the area's past with items like:

  • antique farm tools
  • an American flag made when the United States consisted of 39 States
  • an organ from the First Dutch Reformed Church
  • the winding stairway and the mantle from the Hanie House on Hook Mountain Road

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the area's population was 20,839 and consisted of 7,380 households and 5,867 families. This was an increase of 3.3% from 2000's count of 20,839. The racial makeup of the townspeople was the following: 

  • 84.95% white
  • 0.93% African American
  • 2.55% Hispanic or Latino
  • 12.57% Asian
  • 0.04% Native American
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 0.36% other races
  • 1.14% two or more races

The 2010 median household income was $119,493. This was an increase from $94,557 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the employed residents was the following:

  • 11.44% business and financial occupations
  • 11.11% sales positions
