Montville is a township located in the northeastern region of Morris County, New Jersey. The town was ranked 13th in Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" issue in 2013 and 17th in 2011. The Dutch were the first European settlers to come to the area. They referred to it as Uyle-Kill, translating to Owl-Kill. The first roads were formed in 1740. The area was used as a military route that took General George Washington's troops from Morristown to the Hudson River in the American Revolutionary War. In 1828 construction on the Morris Canal was completed bringing both commercial and residential development. The area was officially incorporated as a township in 1867, taking land from Pequannock Township.

In 1867, the first school was built on Taylortown Road. It became the town hall until it was converted to the first post office in 1939. The building reopened in 1963 as the Montville Township Museum. The museum offers it's guest a look into the area's past with items like:

  • antique farm tools
  • an American flag made when the United States consisted of 39 States
  • an organ from the First Dutch Reformed Church
  • the winding stairway and the mantle from the Hanie House on Hook Mountain Road
