A Look Into the Past of River Edge, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in River Edge, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, have sponsored the following article on the neighborhood's history.

River Edge

The borough of River Edge is situated in the central region of Bergen County, New Jersey. The Hackensack River forms the 1203.2-acre community's eastern border. The Van Saun County Park helps create a portion of the western border. The main roadways in the area are Kinderkamack Road, Continental Avenue, Midland Avenue, and Howland Avenue.

History

The borough was originally incorporated as Riverside in 1894, but the name was officially changed in 1930. It was named based on the eastern edge lying along the Hackensack River's edge.

In the southern region of the borough lies the historical site of the New Bridge Landing. New Bridge was a small hamlet made prosperous by the mills that lined the river. During the American Revolutionary War, the bridge crossing allowed General George Washington a path to retreat from the British in 1776. It has been referred to as The Bridge That Saved A Nation. During the duration of the war, as many as eleven battles would take place at this location. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Historical Landmarks

In addition to the New Bridge Landing, located at New Bridge Road, is the Steuben House. This historic house was built in 1774 and was originally located in New Milford. However, in 1977 it was moved to its current location on Main Street. The house became the headquarters of General George Washington after being confiscated from Loyalist Jan Zabriskie. The state awarded Baron Von Steuben the estate in 1783. Steuben renovated it before selling it back to the Zabriskie family in 1788.

Another house in the vicinity of the New Bridge Landing is the Demarest House, built in 1794. The house also was moved from New Milton to its current location. Initially, it was built beside the French Burial Ground in Milton, but in 1956 it was relocated to River Edge. The house was home to John Paulson, a mill owner. Its design included a stove chimney that was considered a technological advancement during its time.
