The Heights

The Heights neighborhood is a district situated in the northern region of Jersey City in Hudson County, New Jersey. The town of Hoboken lies between the community and the Hudson River. Hilltop and Bergen Section are the southern neighbors, while Weehawken and New Durham are to its north. The main roadways include Central Avenue, Summit Avenue, John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and Palisade Avenue. 

History

The town was originally included in the Pavonia colony of New Netherland. One of the first families to settle in the area was the Van Vorst family. Their house, the Van Vorst House, was built in 1742 and still stands on Palisade Avenue. It is regarded as the oldest structure in the county. The colonial residence was constructed with a stone design, common to the first settlers' houses, and has weathered well. Cornelius Van Vorst served as Jersey City's mayor from 1860 to 1862. Sometime between 1835 and 1837, he built the Dr. William Barrow Mansion, located on Wayne Street in Jersey City. The area was officially incorporated into a town in 1852 and three years later into a city. The city's first mayor was Garrett D. Van Reipen.

The Leonard Gordon Park, located on the corner of Manhattan Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, is another great park to visit. The historical landmark of the Buffalo and Bears. The sculptor was built in 1907 by Solon Hannibal Borglum. Solon's brother, Gutzon, is credited for the Mount Rushmore sculpture and the Abraham Lincoln statue located in front of the Court House in Newark.

The average household income for the community was $69,514. As many as 42% have at least a four-year college degree, 29% make between $75,000 and $149,000 per year.
