The borough of West Long Branch is situated in the eastern section of Monmouth County in New Jersey. The borough takes up 1,849.6 acres, of which 1.25% or 256 acres is water, such as Franklin Lake and Turtle Mill Brook. Some neighboring communities include Long Branch Beach, Eatontown, Oakhurst, Elberon, and Wertheim's Corner.
The borough was formerly known as Mechanicsville from the 1900s until the Civil War. Prior to that name, it went by Branchburg during the late 1800s. Its current name was said to have derived from its location to the Shrewsbury River. It seceded from Eatontown in 1908 based on the residents claiming they were not getting a proper return on their taxes.
Within the community is the Murry Guggenheim House, also referred to as the Guggenheim Library. The building, constructed around 1903, sits on seven acres and was designed by architects John Merven Carrère and Thomas Hastings with the architectural style of Beaux-Arts. It is located on Cedar Avenue and Norwood Avenue. Murry Guggenheim purchased the estate as his summer resort for himself and his wife, Leonie.
In 1967, the addition of the library was built on the north side of the mansion. A second expansion took place in 2003, allowing for as many as 100,000 more books and cost approximately $14 million.
