Woodbridge Township

The township of Woodbridge is situated in the eastern region of Middlesex County in New Jersey. In 2000 it was the sixth-most-populous municipality in the state.  Within the town is the intersection of the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey's busiest highways. Menlo Park is just to the west of the township, along with Clara Barton. Perth Amboy sits to the southeast of the town's borders along the Arthur Kill. Carteret and Rahway are both north of the neighborhood. 

History

The area is the oldest township in the state and, in 1669, was granted a royal charter by King Charles II of England. It was officially incorporated in 1798. Some of the area's early settlers included: 

• Captain John Pike
• Thomas Bloomfield
• John Bishop
• John Bloomfield
• Samuel Moore

The first gristmill in the state was built by Jonathan Singletary Dunham, who was married to Mary Bloomfield, a relative of Joseph Bloomfield. Dunham is also said to be the eighth great grandfather to the 44th United States President, Barack Obama. The Jonathan Singletary Dunham House is still standing on Rahway Avenue and is the site of a memorial to the first gristmill. 

Neighborhood

The Woodbridge Center, located on Woodbridge Center Drive, is the third-largest retail center in the state. It is home to more than 150 retail stores and includes a play area, trackless train ride, and a carousel. The many retail shops located in the center include:

• the Fix
• Pandora
• Red Robin
• Brighton

Demographics

In 2010 the area was home to 99,585 people; this consisted of 34,615 households and 25,754 families. This was an increase of 2.5% from the count of 97,203 residents in 2000. The racial makeup of the townspeople was the following:

• 59.18% white 
• 9.85% African American
• 15.63% Hispanic or Latino
• 22.42% Asian
• 0.32% Native American
• 0.04% Pacific Islander
• 5.28% other races
• 2.91% two or more races

As many as 35.26% of the town's citizens were born outside of the country. The many ancestries of the residents include:

• Italian
• Irish
• Polish
• German
• Hungarian

The median income of the households was $79,277 in 2010. Men averaged an income of $60,139 while women averaged $46,078. The breakdown of occupations of the employed residents was the following:

• 13.79% office and administrative support roles 
• 11.08% management occupations
• 8.76% service and sales positions
